4 Downsides of Glaucoma Drops
Are your glaucoma drops causing discomfort or not delivering results? Uncover the top four challenges of glaucoma drops and explore better ways to manage your treatment.

Glaucoma is a severe eye condition that can lead to vision loss if not treated properly. One of the most common treatments for glaucoma involves using eye drops designed to reduce intraocular pressure (IOP) and prevent damage to the optic nerve. While these drops can be effective, they come with potential downsides.

If you or a loved one is using glaucoma drops, it’s important to understand the possible side effects and challenges. Cory Bergman, MD, in Rapid City, South Dakota, and Casper, Wyoming, can answer your questions about this serious condition.  Here are four downsides of glaucoma drops that you should know.

1. Side effects and irritation

One of the most common issues with glaucoma eye drops is the risk of side effects. Some people experience mild irritation, redness, or a stinging sensation when applying the drops, which can be uncomfortable, especially if you need to use them multiple times daily.

In some cases, the drops can also cause allergic reactions such as itching, swelling, or possibly blurred vision. Using the drops may cause serious eye infections or changes in the texture of the cornea, although this happens less often.

If you notice persistent discomfort, changes in your vision, or any other unusual symptoms, it’s important to contact us. We may recommend switching to a different drop type or adjusting your treatment plan.

2. Consistent use is needed

Some people find it difficult to stay consistent with glaucoma drops. Many glaucoma medications require you to apply them once or twice a day, sometimes more, depending on the prescribed dosage. If you miss doses, it can reduce the effectiveness of the treatment. Missing doses can also increase IOP and worsen the condition.

Some people need help remembering to use eye drops regularly. Consistency may be hard to achieve if you have busy routines or experience forgetfulness due to age or health conditions. People with limited dexterity, such as those with arthritis, may also find it challenging to handle the small bottles or apply the drops correctly.

Setting reminders or asking a family member to assist with the application is helpful. However, even with strategies in place, staying on top of daily eye drop use can feel burdensome, potentially leading to treatment non-compliance.

3. Cost

Even though many health insurance plans cover glaucoma treatments, the cost of eye drops can still be a concern for some. Glaucoma medications can be expensive, especially if you require specific brands or your insurance doesn’t fully cover the cost.

Over time, this can add up to a significant financial burden, particularly for those who need to use drops for the long term. Additionally, some newer or combination drops may cost more than traditional ones. You should consider the financial impact when starting a treatment regimen.
